Say goodbye to traditional payment methods as residents prepare to use their palms for seamless transactions and cash withdrawals at Metro stations.
In a groundbreaking move towards enhancing payment convenience, the United Arab Emirates is set to introduce a revolutionary palm vein technology that will allow residents to make transactions and withdraw cash with just the palm of their hand. This innovative solution, currently under development, aims to eliminate the need for traditional payment methods such as credit cards and digital applications, offering a faster and more seamless experience.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) in collaboration with the Central Bank of the UAE. It was recently showcased at the ICP stand during Gitex Global 2024, where attendees got a glimpse of this cutting-edge technology.
Advanced Biometric Solution
The palm vein technology, which is believed to be less intrusive than facial recognition systems, operates on the principle that each individual’s palm veins are unique. According to an ICP spokesperson, individuals will be required to enroll their palm biometrics at the ICP platform, linking it to their personal profiles. This process ensures the accuracy of individual details and allows for secure transactions.
“People can make payments or withdraw cash using their palms from ATMs,” the spokesperson noted, emphasizing the high level of security this method offers. “You cannot share palm vein details with others, reducing the risk of unauthorized access that sometimes occurs with credit cards.”
Enhancing Accessibility at Metro Stations
The technology is designed not only for cash withdrawals but also for public transport accessibility. Residents will soon be able to access Metro stations using their palms instead of relying on metro cards. This feature is particularly advantageous in crowded places, providing a streamlined and efficient means of accessing public transport services.
“This mode of palm vein payments can also be used at crowded places like metro stations to make it easier for people to access services,” the spokesperson explained.
Future Vision
The project aligns with the UAE Vision 2031 program, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to investing in advanced technologies to improve the quality of life for its citizens and residents. The ICP is currently in the final stages of development, with regulations and policies being established to facilitate the rollout of this innovative technology.
Once all requirements are met, the UAE will proudly become the first country in the Middle East to implement palm vein payment technology, paving the way for a new era in transaction methods.
As the UAE continues to embrace technological advancements, residents can look forward to a future where convenience, security, and efficiency are at the forefront of daily transactions.
