Championing responsible AI development, the UAE supports international regulations to ensure safety, ethics, and innovation in AI systems.
The UAE Cabinet has officially approved the country’s national stance on artificial intelligence (AI), defining how the technology should be responsibly used and the nation’s goals and priorities in this rapidly advancing field. This new policy aligns the UAE with global efforts to ensure that AI development is both ethical and secure, positioning the nation as a key contributor to international AI governance.
At the heart of the UAE’s position is its support for international regulations that hold countries accountable for the creation and deployment of AI tools that could cause harm or destabilization. By advocating for global alliances to govern, secure, and advance AI systems, the UAE emphasizes the importance of a cooperative approach to technology. Research and development efforts are encouraged to focus on promoting peace, stability, and the responsible use of AI applications. The policy also highlights the need to ensure data safety, security, and privacy protection.
Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, emphasized the UAE’s leadership role in shaping AI governance globally. “The UAE has become a significant player in the global governance of artificial intelligence, actively contributing to international policy discussions and helping define the standards and frameworks that will shape the future of AI,” he said.
Advancing AI for Economic Growth and Social Well-being
The UAE’s AI policy is driven by a vision of using AI to fuel economic diversification and innovation. By focusing on developing high-impact technological solutions, the nation seeks to create advancements that benefit not only the economy but also society as a whole. The policy reflects the UAE’s commitment to ensuring that AI development goes hand in hand with improving the well-being of its people.
The policy is underpinned by six core principles: advancement, cooperation, community, ethics, sustainability, and security. These principles demonstrate the UAE’s dedication to aligning AI development with social, ethical, and environmental priorities, ensuring that technological progress remains grounded in values that benefit society at large.
Omran Sharaf, assistant foreign minister for Advanced Science and Technology, highlighted the importance of adopting such forward-thinking policies. “By aligning the country’s foreign policy with global artificial intelligence standards, we enable local stakeholders, including private enterprises, research institutions, and others, to tackle the challenges of artificial intelligence on an international scale,” Sharaf said.
